It has been over a year since Mercedes-Benz ceased the issuance of external coding certificates in April 2024. Throughout this period, retrofitting features on newer models equipped with the MBUX 7 system—such as the W206 C-Class, X254 GLC, W223 S-Class, and W214 E-Class—could only be accomplished by adding expensive factory SA codes. For a time, we believed that bypassing the MBUX 7 coding restrictions would require something as advanced as quantum computing

Unexpectedly, a breakthrough arrived at the end of this past April: the “Time Rollback” solution, a topic now being discreetly discussed within the inner circles. This method is an algorithm that utilizes an EZS certificate (a developer certificate used to calculate keys) to revert an ECU to a specific state from its initial production. It appears to be a backdoor originally left by factory engineers for their own use

Upon learning of this, we immediately began our own research. Initially, we presumed the algorithm was highly complex. However, within a few days, we discovered it was surprisingly simple, and its initial discovery was likely a coincidence. We have since mastered this algorithm as well

However, the method has a significant drawback: it cannot target the EZS (Electronic Ignition Switch) itself. This means it is inapplicable to any functions related to the ignition system. Consequently, critical safety-related features like the Driving Assistance Package (Code 20P), rear-axle steering, and Digital Light with projection function (colloquially known as “meteor shower headlights”) cannot be programmed using this solution

This limitation means the algorithm is currently restricted to more conventional and simpler retrofits on MBUX 7 models. For instance, it allows for the coding of Air Balance, the 360° Camera, the AMG menu, and the Burmester sound system on the W206, X254, W223, and W214. By the way, that is successfully enables coding for features like Ambient Lighting and Keyless-entry on MBUX 7 like the W177 A-Class, GLB, and GLA. Even with its limitations, this is a good news,isn’t it?

Technology evolves at a breakneck pace. It’s entirely possible that as I write this, someone has already broken through this restriction and found a way to apply a similar technique to the EZS

The EZS developer certificates have a validity period of only 15 days, after which a new, valid certificate is required. Our next plan is to investigate the possibility of using an algorithm to calculate the security “lock” of the EZS directly. After all, now that the “0-to-1” breakthrough has been made, this next step no longer seems impossible, does it?
